Maria Bourbouli is a marine microbiologist, interested in microbes colonizing extreme environments. She received her 5 years degree in Marine Biology-Oceanography at Sciences of the Sea, Marche Polytechnic University in Italy. In 2003, she was a young researcher in a bilateral collaboration between Greece (HCMR) and Italy (Marine Molecular Microbiology and Ecology Laboratory, CNR, Sicily) regarding bacterial symbionts of marine invertebrates with biotechnological interest. Maria has won a 3-year Fellowship of Distinction and is currently working on her Ph.D. in Microbial Diversity and Biotechnology of the extreme environment of Kolumbo, the submarine volcano in the Aegean Sea.
