Tell us about your work/ research. What kinds of things do you do?

My research involves the development of autonomous surface vehicle platforms for scientific research such as acoustic and optic mapping of shallow water reefs, satellite validation and calibration and water quality sampling. My job includes designing, prototyping, programming, manufacturing and testing my vehicle concepts. What I find most fascinating and satisfying is being able to see your ideas turn into reality. That never gets old.

What sparked your initial interest in your career?

During my elemental school years, I had the opportunity to go on a field trip hosted by the marine sciences department. We went all around La Parguera observing the different ecosystems and organisms that inhabited them. Since then, I always wondered what I could do to be able to work there when I grew up. During my undergrad studies in Mechanical Engineering I always gravitated towards the mechatronics, design and 3D prototyping aspect of engineering. I had the opportunity to be part of a research in Marine Robotics, which opened my mind to this field and motivated me to continue pursuing it. The ocean has always been an integral part of my life, and what better way is there to spend it than exploring and working in it?

Who influenced you or encouraged you the most?

My family has been very encouraging in following my passion and have been those who have always believed in me. I would also like to mention my current research advisor, who has encouraged me to explore and expand my horizons into the possibilities of career paths in oceanography with a preparation in engineering.

What element of your work/ study do you think is the most fascinating?

Seeing my ideas go from a sketch to a working prototype, that never gets old.

How did you get involved with Ocean Exploration Trust? How did you become part of the expedition team?

I applied for the ROV engineering internship position after a colleague aboard the Nautilus in a previous expedition arranged a Ship to Shore video conference with Dr. Bob Ballard. After this experience, I was inspired to apply and contribute to this expedition into the unknown.

What other jobs led you to your current career?

During my undergrad years, I worked as a tour guide in La Parguera, Kitesurf Instructor and I had my own sushi business. After graduating, I work part time at an engineering firm focusing on renewable energy and worked as a chief engineer on a research vessel in parallel to my Master’s. I am a firm believer in learning as much as you can about as much as you can, and that a positive attitude and gratitude to those who have taught you will take you a long way.

What are your degrees and certifications?

Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering— University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez 2023

Masters in Marine Sciences and Oceanography 2023-Current

What are your hobbies?

I love the ocean, so my hobbies include kitesurfing, fishing and diving. I would also consider myself a cooking enthusiast!

What advice would you give someone who wants to have a career like yours?

Do not limit yourself to just your preparation and background, expand your horizons and learn as much as you can about as much as you can. All skills learned are a new tool in your toolbox, which only helps you prepare for anything that heads your way.
